How to Organize Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers

Put the tools for a task where that task happens.

Organize kitchen cabinets and drawers by grouping daily tools, dishes and supplies around their use. Keep frequent items reachable, separate occasional pieces and test the arrangement before buying organizers. A practical kitchen should be easy to put away as well as easy to use.

Where should you start organizing kitchen cabinets?

Start with one task, such as preparing breakfast or putting away dishes, and the storage it relies on. This reveals whether the items you use together are scattered. Finish that category before emptying more cabinets than you can reasonably reset.

  • Group utensils and equipment by what you do with them.
  • Separate daily dishes from occasional serving pieces.
  • Identify belongings that do not belong in the kitchen.

How should you arrange frequently used items?

Place frequent items where you can reach and return them comfortably. Avoid arrangements that require moving a heavy or awkward object to reach something used every day. Account for who else uses the kitchen rather than organizing only for the tallest household member.

  • Keep work surfaces usable while choosing nearby storage.
  • Check that drawers close freely with the proposed contents.
  • Place lids and related parts where their relationship is obvious.

When do drawer dividers and containers help?

Dividers help when a useful category already exists and needs a clear boundary. Measure the usable interior, including any hinges or drawer restrictions, before selecting products. A product that fits the cabinet but not your belongings can add an unnecessary obstacle.

How do cabinets and pantry storage work together?

Choose a primary home for each food category and a clearly identified place for extras. Spreading the same category across several cabinets makes it harder to check what you have. The pantry and the cooking area can serve different roles without duplicating everything.

  • Keep daily quantities near the place of use when practical.
  • Label overflow so it is checked before another purchase.
  • Revisit any category that repeatedly ends up on the counter.
